Model Block, Government Street
Suzanne Turner Associates worked with Ritter Maher Architects to re-imagine an integral block along the historic Government Street corridor in the mid-city merchant's area of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The 1.6 million dollar project will transform this stretch of Government Street between Baton Rouge High and Catholic High. The centerpiece of the project is the renovation of a two story building into Ritter Maher's new office headquarters. A non-historic building was removed to create seventeen new parking spaces for the architects and neighboring tenants.
Government Street is in the midst of a renaissance. After the initiation of the Better Block BR campaign by the Center for Planning Excellence and partners, city officials explored the possibility of narrowing the street by removing one lane of travel, and dedicating that extra space to bike lanes. Atomic Pop Shop, a local record store will remain in its current location, and Purusa Yoga Studio and Modern Meals will join the block as new tenants.
