Louisiana State Capitol Campus Landscape Master Plan
Through the collaborative effort between Post Architects, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, and Suzanne Turner, a campus master plan was created for the Louisiana State Capitol Grounds. Responding to the 1932 art deco capitol building, the landscape features a hierarchy of spaces, architectonic shapes, and formal gardens with grand vistas.
Recommendations include treatments for the Memorial Gardens, parking areas, trees and bosques, park landscape, circulation, lake edge, and the preservation of views. Several garden plans designed by E.A. McIlhenny served as a guide for the preservation and maintenance of the Palm Garden and Walled Garden. Since the completion of the master plan document, new state buildings have been constructed and while the original gardens have been preserved, the new landscapes follow the same guidelines providing a seamless visitor experience throughout the campus.
