Louisiana Speaks: Pattern Book and Planning Toolkit

In the wake of the destruction of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, the Center for Planning Excellence and Urban Design Associates of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania were chosen by the State of Louisiana to develop a set of guidelines and standards, formatted as a Pattern Book, to assist residents in the throes of rebuilding their homes and landscapes.

Suzanne Turner Associates chose the images, produced the plans, and wrote the text in the chapter of the book related to landscapes, with an eye towards sustainable landscape concepts and solutions that would recover quickly, and which would withstand the onslaught of subsequent storms. The book won the highest honor awarded by the Congress for the New Urbanism – The Award of Excellence.
